The multitude of small tour operators in Jomtien and Pattaya offer a wide range of day and overnight trips.

For example, you can visit the Bridge over the River Kwai (which is in Kanchanaburi, to the North West of Bangkok). In general, included in the price you’ll get transport to the River Kwai, a trip on the railway that was built by the Prisoners of War, a visit to a museum dedicated to them and also a trip to the War Cemetary (which is a very moving experience). Overnight accommodation is often provided on a floating hotel on the River Kwai itself (though surprisingly there are plumbed in toilets, warm water, showers etc.). In the evening, the bar will be detached from the main hotel and towed down the river where you can feed the fish or take a quick dip at one of the waterfalls.

Another interesting over-night (or two night) trip is a visit to Koh Chang (Elephant Island) or Koh Samet. These islands are far more picturesque than Pattaya as they are significantly less developed. The beaches are cleaner and the waters clearer, with fantastic beach restaurants where you can enjoy superb food whilst watching the sunset over the horizon. Naturally, there is far less to do here than there is in Pattaya and the nightlife is much lower key. However, both are beautiful places that are worth visiting.

There are a range of other trips, such as the Bangkok Floating Market (which in reality is now more of a tourist attraction than a true market) which for first time visitors are probably worthwhile and can be done in a single day (albeit with an early start).

Alternatively, many tour companies will take you round many of the local attractions, visiting two or three in a day. Given that a car is included in the price of your Villa, you can very easily visit these attractions under your own steam – however, if you’re feeling lazy and want someone else to do the driving and navigating, then they’re worth considering.
