Fishing--Thai Style

I remember the morning well, back in December 2002 in my wife's village close to Buriram. "Do you want to come fishing?" she said. 'Why not!' was my response. I had foolishly imagined myself sitting with a rod and line and, perhaps, a cold beer.

How wrong can you be …

Off we set on the village 'tractor' (actually, more or an engine on wheels than a tractor as we'd imagine one) - towing a small trailer precariously behind. Along the bumpy roads and through a few of the small villages we went until finally we stopped.

Out came some guys with what looked like an old fashioned flue that you'd see on the rooftops of Paris. Must be dropping that off with someone on the way I thought to myself. Wrong again!

When we finally arrived at the fishing pond, off we all jumped. The 'flue' was put into the water and the tractor engine attached to the other end.

First, empty the water..

The engine started and I finally understood!

The 'flue' was a pump and fishing entailed pumping the water out of the pond so we could simply scoop up the fish--typical Thai ingeniousness.

Time for a beer whilst we waited for the water to empty -at least I'd got that part right!!

..then, scoop up the fish
