Elephants are a long standing symbol of Thailand and have traditionally been used in place of machinery in agriculture and forestry, much the same as our cattle were used in the West at one time. Although still used in this way in some rural areas, many elephants are now an established part of the tourist industry, and can be found performing in shows and pageants throughout Thailand. Despite their size and strength, elephants (who are part of the pakiderm family) are surprisingly gentle and intelligent creatures and are loved and very well cared for by the Thai people.
A trip to the country is almost not complete without having experienced an Elephant Ride. Rides are available at a number of venues close to your Villa, together with Elephant Shows. You’ll find that elephants are remarkably good footballers and some even try their hands (or should I say trunks) at painting.
These gentle giants, depending on the venue, will take you on a ride through the forest where not only do you get to experience this somewhat novel form of transport, but can also marvel at the beauty of the tropical scenery.
Try a visit to the Pattaya Elephant Village, which is a home for retired elephants that had previously spent their lives working in the forests. These Old Aged Pensioners now have a much gentler workload which helps keep them active and interested as they enjoy their retirement. Here you can combine an elephant trek with an ox-cart ride, rafting, jungle walking and a meal at their restaurant - a great day out, and a favourite with children and adults alike
